The History and Culture of Shisha

The most striking thing about shisha is that its function has barely changed across centuries: it keeps people sitting around a table for a long time. The technology changed, the materials changed, but the social role stayed almost exactly the same.

Origins and spread

Early forms of the water pipe are generally traced to the Indian subcontinent, spreading through Persia into Ottoman lands. The Turkish word nargile itself comes from the Persian nârgil, meaning coconut — the earliest bases were made from coconut shells, which explains the name.

The Ottoman coffeehouse

Shisha rose alongside coffee in Ottoman city life. Coffeehouses were not merely places that sold a drink; they were public spaces where news circulated and stories were told. The pipe served as the room's unit of time: one shisha meant roughly an hour of sitting.

Decline and return

As cigarettes spread through the mid-twentieth century, shisha faded — fast consumption pushed aside a slow habit. From the 1990s onward, flavoured tobacco brought a strong return. That revival was not simply nostalgic: a new generation discovered shisha not in the coffeehouse but in the lounge.

Today's lounge culture

Modern hookah lounges kept the social function of the coffeehouse while changing the presentation entirely: heat management devices, personal hoses, glass bases and designed seating. The one constant is that people around the table do not want to get up for two or three hours.

Shisha on the Mediterranean

In multilingual tourist towns like Alanya, shisha culture took on another dimension. Where Turkish, Russian, German and Middle Eastern guests share a table, the pipe works as a common language. That may be the closest it has come to its function five centuries ago.
